Photographic works
These images are created in my studio in total darkness.
I begin each action in front of the camera which is positioned on a tripod,
I open the aperature of the camera then holding candles, flashlights or flashbulbs,
I begin a series of gestures that are exposed on to the negative.
When I feel that the action is complete I close the aperature and move onto the next frame.
I try to remove the compulsion of constructive thinking from the creation of the
images and allow the spontaneity and concentration of my body in action to dictate
the result of the image. Expression over illustration. Each gesture develops
spontaneously and represents the total concentration of my body in action.
I work in a state between chaos and control where and notion of physicality
or conciousness dissolves into one vehicle for action.
I do not overlay negatives, nor do I use computers to manipulate these images
so as to retain the integrity of the action from the moment of its creation.
I feel the aesthetic results of the images are similar to the aesthetic beauty
of nature - the result of a process rather than a goal in itself.
